This is a half-forgotten gem of a movie, which I can't recall ever seeing referenced in any movie history. That's an omission. Excellent performances from all three leads. Neither Michael Redgrave nor Flora Robson ever give a bad performance anyway, but the undisputed star is Valerie Hobson, in a role which demands every kind of emotion from her. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by just how good an actress she is in this film. In many of her earlier roles she seems to be relying too much on her beauty (which is admittedly without peer) and a certain trademark arrogance eg. Contraband or Q Planes. Always watchable though. Here she still keeps that clipped English accent (which people seem to find either irresistible or irritating, I'm in the former category myself) but in this film gives a powerful performance as a woman who is forced to adapt to the chaos created by the war. Initially wiped out by the news of her beloved husband's death, after a period of inconsolable grief she manages to build a new life for herself without him, only to be confronted with the news that he has in fact survived. This movie shows vividly how it wasn't just those who went off to fight who had their lives turned upside down by the war and here we see the other side of the coin.
