Ik kwam dit boek toevallig tegen en was meteen geïnteresseerd. Weinig mensen herkennen de naam BIS of voluit: 'the Bank of International Settlements'. Zelfs tegenwoordig nog echter, reikt hun invloed ver.

Dit boek gaat voornamelijk in op de rol van BIS voor, tijdens en kort na de tweede wereldoorlog. Daar zit natuurlijk ook het grootste stuk aan twijfelachtige overwegingen en handelingen. De arrogantie strekt ver, zeker in combinatie met een erg smalle blik naar wat is juist (als de formulieren maar kloppen, dan is alles gezegend).

Het boek zit ook vol met verbijsterende anekdotes die echt passen in een totaal andere cultuur van vertrouwen (en analoog daaraan: geheimzinnigheid). Sommige daarvan zijn ontluisterend: het kon de bank jeuken dat het Duitse goud ook Joodse kiezen betrof... Andere zijn ook ontzettend mooi: in een halfuur werd er twee miljard geregeld onder de bankiers om de pond te redden, zonder iets op schrift te hoeven zetten. Men schudde elkaar de hand en dat was genoeg. Tegenwoordig bestaat dat niet eens meer, zeker niet op dat niveau. Die tegenstrijdigheden maken die instantie en daarmee het boek erg leuk.

Ik vond het een erg engagerend boek. Vlot geschreven, en een inkijkje in een mysterieuze instantie met ver reikende invloed.

De moeite waard!
