Samenvatting

Many of our favourite brands now openly espouse 'ethical' credentials, so how is it that they can import billions of pounds' worth of goods from the developing world every year while leaving the people who produce them barely scraping a living? Are they being cynically opportunistic? Or is it that global commerce will always be incompatible with the eradication of poverty? And, if so, are charity and fair trade initiatives the only way forward?

In Unfair Trade Conor Woodman travels the world - from Nicaragua to the Congo and from Laos to Afghanistan - to establish the truth. In the course of his journeys he uncovers some truly shocking stories about the way big business operates, but he also sees a way forward that could reconcile the apparently irreconcilable.

I know Conor Woodman from his programms "scam city" and "around the world in 80 days". He seems to me like a fair/trustworhty person. So I decided to buy his book (last year or so, excuse me for writing this review a year after) because I wanted to read stuff that is unbiased. This book really shows the very truth of how people, mostly in third world countries or emerging markets, live. Or how their daily activities (job) affect they way people live in those countries, from Nicaragua, Laos, China, Afghanistan etc. But it also tells positively and negatively about the story behind the fair trade logo used in our society.

Conor has really talked with people from different level (workers but also key/important people in higher position) and I really like this personal touch of real people explaining their situation. You will be surprised that the expensive lobsters you order at chic restaurants in US (not sure about other countries), these are for example from Nicaragua. Those people who catches lobster risk to become deaf forever ( underwater pressure) or just die.

Basically the story tells that in order to stay alive by working, people faces death. But it also discusses matter about political/economical issue within a particularly country. Hence, it really explains the complete situation and why things are just the way the are.

I think this is quite a book that will open your eyes and makes you think thoroughly about the products that you daily use (China and phone plant is also a chapter included in this book). It shows you "behind the scene" of processing products and I think you should read this and get understanding of what is going on and what is wrong within the source/ or the start of a production before it reaches you.
