Indien je een -neutraal- inzicht wil verwerven in het katholieke fenomeen 'heilig', is dit boek een ware aanrader... de eruditie waarmee emeritus professor Robert Bartlett de verschillende categorieën heiligen beschrijft is fenomenaal; het is echter geen droog opsommingswerk - elke categorie wordt erna op anekdotische wijze behandeld, van het vroege christendom tot de late middeleeuwen en dit op een manier die pas mogelijk is na meer dan veertig jaar intensieve studie van het onderwerp. Dit boek is zeker niet geschreven 'voor en door' theologen, maar is voor elke mediëvist of geboeide leek een must - zeker ook voor de kunsthistoricus van de middeleeuwen en later...
