"Thomas Piketty (Clichy, 1971) is een Franse econoom, verbonden aan de École d’économie de Paris. Van 1993 tot 1995 was hij hoogleraar aan de Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Hij is columnist voor Libération en Le Monde. Thomas Piketty is het meest bekend van zijn boek Kapitaal in de 21ste eeuw (Captial in the Twenty-First Century). Dit boek richt zich op dezelfde thema’s die in zijn werk voorkomen: verdeling en verspreiding van rijkdom in de afgelopen 250 jaar. Het boek beargumenteerd dat de hoeveelheid van capitaal terugkeer in de ontwikkelde wereld steeds groter is dan de economische groei, en dat dit de ongelijkheid in rijkdom veroorzaakt en steeds groter wordt in de toekomst. Piketty ziet dit als een globaal probleem en wil dit aanpakken door een re-distributie van geld door middel van een progressieve globale belasting op rijkdom.
Piketty is gespecialiseerd in economische ongelijkheid en kiest daarin een historische en statistisch standpunt. Zijn werk kijkt naar de snelheid van kapitaal toestroom in relatie met economische groei vanaf de negentiende eeuw tot aan heden.
