Shunryu Suzuki
Shunryu Suzuki (1904-1971) behoort tot de Soto zenschool en is een directe afstammeling van de grote zenmeester Dogen. In Japan was hij al een gerespecteerd zenmeester toen hij in 1958 op drieënvijftigjarige leeftijd voor een kort bezoek naar Amerika ging. Daar raakte hij zo onder de indruk van de westerse belangstelling voor zen dat hij besloot zich in Amerika te vestigen. Er ontstond een zencentrum waaruit naderhand weer een aantal andere centra zijn ontstaan, onder andere het eerste zenklooster buiten Azië.
