Mary Wollstonecraft

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759 - 97) was an educationalist and feminist writer. Part of the radical set that included Blake and Fuseli, her relationship with William Godwin and the birth of their child - Mary Shelley - outside of marraige caused great scandal after her death. Miriam Brody is a professor in the Writing Program at Ithaca College, New York. Her most recent writing on Mary Wollstonecraft appears in Feminist Interpretations of Mary Wollstonecraft (1996).

Samenvatting

Mary Wollstoncraft's passionate declaration of female independence shattered the stereotype of docile, decorative womanhood, anticipated a new era of equality and established her as the founder of modern feminism.

As far as we know: this book is the oldest plea for womens rights that still exists in western countries. That's why people who are interested in books and human rights should have this in their collection. The very strong point Mary Wolstonecraft made, and that really stroke me: How can you expect women to contribute in a pro social way to their environment if you are not treating them as people? This is still a question that can be asked.
It's not easy to read all of it, because it's written in a different time and fashion, but we should cherish this book.
