Fons Trompenaars studeerde economie aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam (1981). Later promoveerde hij aan de Wharton School, Universiteit van Pennsylvania. Zijn proefschrift betrof het verschil in opvattingen over organisatiestructuur in verscheidene culturen. Zowel thuis, met een Franse moeder en Nederlandse vader, als tijdens zijn werk voor Shell, met vestigingen in negen landen, heeft hij veel ervaring opgedaan met cultuurverschillen.Na zijn studie werkte hij bij de afdeling Personeel van Royal Dutch Shell Group in Rotterdam. Vanaf 1985 werkte hij aan functie waardering en personeelsontwikkeling bij Shell Research Laboratories in Amsterdam.Fons Trompenaars is oprichter en directeur van Trompenaars Hampden-Turner (THT), een vermaard consultingbureau op het gebied van intercultureel management. Trompenaars is (co)auteur van 11 bestsellers op het gebied van cultuur en business, innovatie en leiderschap. Zijn boeken zijn vertaald in meer dan tien talen.
