Education 3.0 How To Get Your Kids What They Need To Succeed

This book strives to help parents integrate these ideas into theirlifestyles. Instilling this thirst of lifelong learning in our children andembracing the “village mindset” as a society are two important pillarsand the essential values of Education 3.0.Lifelong Learning – Schoolteachers often refer to the goal of havingstudents become “lifelong learners” as an overall objective inthe quest to educate them. But, what does that really mean and areschoolteachers achieving that? How can schoolteachers transformstudents into lifelong learners? It definitely takes work and the rightattitude towards learning. Creating a positive attitude toward learningrequires that we as parents support our kids’ schoolteachers byserving as educators ourselves and assisting in encouraging our childrento become “lifelong learners.”The Village Mindset – I believe that everyone (parents, schoolteachers,churches, businesses, etc.) should take a part in the educationof our children, and that is a main aspect of Education 3.0.Effectively transforming children into lifelong learners can start withschools and with parents that support learning at home, and can furtherbe built upon through different people and learning experiencesthroughout life. These learning experiences are called “teachablemoments”, and they are critical to embracing the spirit of Education3.0.This is where the village mindset comes in. Hillary Clinton popularizedthe phrase, “It takes a village…” in her 1996 book, titledwith the same name. The title and subject of that book were inspiredby an African proverb that states, “It takes a village to raise a child,”and the phrase has continued to be the mantra of educators andsupporters of education worldwide. By learning to apply the villagemindset, parents can help to create more academically, socially, andcivically successful students. In a nutshell, the village mindset maybe described as an attitude of collective acceptance, trust, and collaborationwith family and community members, which often benefitschildren and supports schools and schoolteachers.With all this being said, Education 3.0 provides a unique view ofthe teaching and learning process. For example, instead of revisitingeducation in the traditional manner, Education 3.0 would consist ofan educator (who can be anyone—a schoolteacher, a parent, another ~ vii ~student or peer, etc.) using relatable (e.g real-world) examples toteach or explain a lesson or concept. Case in point, instead of havingstudents read from a textbook, the educator would send themdirectly to source material. For instance, in a history class, instead ofjust reading from a textbook, students might look through photographs.That learning experience can be quite exciting for both studentsand educators, because when students simply read about childlabor and public housing, (as an example) in a textbook, they donot get the same feel for what life was really like compared to if theyactually look at those children in the public housing and their livingconditions in real, authentic pictures. As the saying goes, “A pictureis worth a thousand words.”This book provides practical and creative ways for parents toapproach the educational process by supporting teaching and learningat home. As involved parents, you become a part of the learningprocess and are able to share in your child’s success.
