The following pages contain the results of a more or less careful examination of between five and six hundred cases of Disease of the Heart.
The tables have been formed from the cases which presented themselves at the Institution for Diseases of the Chest, established seven years ago. In addition to this, a large number of cases were collected in the Melbourne Hospital, in private practice, from cases which either came under my own or the care of my friends.
The diseases incidental to the heart in the colony do not present any very marked differences from those observed in Europe in the symptoms observed during life, and the changes found after death, beyond being of a less inflammatory type. Diseases of a nervous character are more common, and the same may be said of hypertrophy, dilatation, and fatty degeneration.
The chapters on Chorea of the Heart - an affection nearly unknown in cold climates; on Nervous Palpitation, so common amongst females here; Diseases of the Pulmonary Artery and the right side of the Heart - Hypertrophy, Patty Disease, &c. - will be found to contain some observations which may not be without interest to the profession in Europe.
