Sheppard is a good draughtsman and painter himself so all his books are written from experiencing the work, not just by lecturing about it.
I studied in an Art Academy myself but sadly enough, I was taught how to make “modern, con(ceptual) art” only. My heart goes to the classical way of painting and drawing. Very few art schools teach that so I had to purchase a number of books, videos and visit artists in some countries and observe how they work.
I have also read extensively theories and research reports about the painting techniques of several Old Masters.
This book is a little gem, as it describes without a lot of words and bla-bla how to paint in the styles of the Masters he has chosen to exemplify. Lots of step by step, good quality images.
Wise of Sheppard (I think) was to paint different, personal subjects in that manner, thus helping the novice see how a certain technique can apply to modern day subjects.
While I don’t think anyone can, or should, really paint like all those Masters, any information one can get his hands on these days, is very welcome. I truly advise this book as eye opener, as it has many tips on the way the Masters we admire after centuries, used to create Art!Vond je dit een nuttige review?100 -
Als je geïnteresseerd bent in hoe je schildert als de oude meesters van vroeger...dan is dit boek zeker de moeite waard. Het is wel in het Engels maar je kunt het vertalen.
