Samenvatting

Answers to the greatest riddles of existence are revealed through the story of Alex, a young philosopher who, in his quest for the truth behind life’s biggest questions, retreats to the remoteness of the towering coastal redwood forests of coastal Northern California in order to isolate himself in the serene quiet required to plumb the depths of his heart and unsettled, searching mind. Soon he is joined by a group of four young friends who, inspired by his ideas, are compelled to build a small community revolving around this hunt for insights into the nature and meaning of life and the pursuits and principles promoting the greatest potential value for life as a whole. They soon find that the commonplace pursuit of wealth, control and the traditionally-dominant bourgeois measures of success distracts us from the fact that life constitutes its own greatest point, that our life experiences are composed of a finite series of moments, and that it is the full-immersion in these moments and the maximization of our life experiences that offers the immeasurably richer reward and thus the far more significant success in life. The more forms of life that come as close as possible to reaching this true success, the more successful life is as a whole. This same success is sacrificed when the weaknesses of body and mind, especially the narrowly-perceiving egotistical identities and the greed and tribal warfare to which it leads, boil down mankind’s endeavors into an endless cutthroat conflict between those that use their advantages to extract more than they can use to maximize their quality of life from those who can’t afford to sacrifice any more such quality of life. This conservative-tinged version of success actually represents an immense failure, as the cost of this systemic parasitism is nothing less than sacrificing the greatest evolutionary pathway and highest order of our species. Maximizing the total quality of life of all life on earth is the only best objective, and this possibility is burned on the bonfires of outmoded ways of thinking and organizing society and motivating the actions of its contributing members. Life as a whole is oppressed by prevalent spiritual, political, economic, business and other anachronistic frameworks failing to protect and support the whole who are instead softly enslaved by systems rewarding people for their ability to take advantage of disadvantage to the diminishment of total quality of life. When you win the conservative game, life loses. Alex, a natural philosopher, propels his cohorts through a series of dialogues and experiences whereby the answers to all of the big philosophical questions are unearthed: the nature of God, good and evil, health and the self; the myth of modern ‘democracy;’ the majority-sacrificing focus of traditional economics; the cost to total life of the standard business construct and the heart of morality resonating through all questions of right and wrong: the total quality of life the thing adds or subtracts. These and many other truths are illuminated as the group struggles amongst itself to claim and protect love, commit to pursuits wherein self-interest and majority interest are mutually-dependent and ultimately embrace the one shared self that guides us, through our hearts, to attain this greatest possible measure of success.
