William H. Miller, de internationale autoriteit op het gebied van de moderne koopvaardijgeschiedenis, had het niet treffender kunnen zeggen toen hij de schepping die tot stand kwam bij de Schelde-werf (KMS)in de periode 1950-1953 beschreef met de woorden: ”She was one of the loveliest passenger ships ever to sail the Atlantic, and her serene, classical exterior was balanced by superbly decorated accommodation.” Als prachtig passagiersschip vertrok de Kungsholm eind 1953 naar de wereldzeeën en de hele nautische wereld beschouwde haar als het overtuigende bewijs van de grote ontwerp- en bouwkwaliteiten van de KMS.
De Kungsholm voer jarenlang onverdroten en succesvol voor de Svenska Amerika Linien (Swedish America Line - SAL): van 1953 tot 1965. Vervolgens nam de Norddeutscher Lloyd (NL) het schip over en herdoopte het tot Europa. In 1970 fuseerde de NL en de Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) tot de Hapag-Lloyd Aktiengesellschaft. De Europa mocht zich in Duitsland in een enorme populariteit verheugen, die aanhield tot 1981. Toen ging het schip over naar de Costa Compania (CCia) die het tot cruiseschip liet verbouwen en herdoopte tot Columbus C. Tot 29 juli 1984 voer zij profijtelijk rond op zonnige wateren. Die dag sloeg het noodlot toe op het moment dat de Columbus C de haven van Cadiz wilde binnenvaren, maar langs een van de rotsige pieren schampte. Zij kon nog wel worden afgemeerd, maar zakte troosteloos diep in het water weg. Het wrak werd nog wel gelicht door het Nederlandse bergingsbedrijf Smit Tak Internationaal, maar herstel zat er niet meer in. De snijbranders van een sloper in Barcelona – Demoliciónes Españoles - maakten er een einde aan. Na eenendertig jaren trouwe dienst.

Miller, international authority of modern shipping history, could not have stated it better, when he wrote about the masterpiece that was constructed at the Dutch yard ‘De Schelde’ (KMS) in the years 1950-1953: ”She was one of the loveliest passenger ships ever to sail the Atlantic, and her serene, classical exterior was balanced by superbly decorated accommodation.” The beautiful passenger liner Kungsholm left Flushing towards the end of 1953 for the waters of the world and all the nautical experts of the time agreed she was the latest and convincing proof of the superb Dutch ship design and building capabilities.
For many successful years Kungsholm sailed for the Svenska Amerika Linien (Swedish America Line - SAL): from 1953 till 1965. Then the Norddeutscher Lloyd (NL) took over the ship and re-named it Europa. In 1970 NL and the Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) merged to become the Hapag-Lloyd Aktiengesellschaft. In Germany Europa was enormously popular. It lasted till 1981. In that year the ship was sold to the Costa Compania (CCia): it was transferred into a cruiseship and re-named Columbus C. Untill July 29, 1984 she sailed profitably in sunny waters. That day fate struck at the moment Columbus C tried to manoeuvre into the port of Cadiz, but scraped the sharp edge of a breakwater. Although the ship was moored at the quay, she sank pityfully deep in the water. The wreck was salvaged by the Dutch company of Smit Tak International, but there was no more hope of restoration. The cutters of the Barcelona Demoliciónes Españoles had to finish her off. The end came after thirty-one years of loyal service.
