It is also, perhaps, his explanation of why, as a married man and father of two young daughters, he was prepared to risk all by strapping himself to the front of a jet engine with the power of eleven Formula One cars. A daredevil and a petrolhead long before his association with Top Gear, Richard tells the story of his life as an adrenalin junkie, from the small boy showing off with ridiculous stunts on his bicycle to the adolescent with a near-obsessive attraction to speed and the smell of petrol. After a series of jobs in local radio, he graduated to television and eventually to Top Gear, one of the world's most popular shows, upgrading his car with each step up the ladder. His insights into the personalities, the camaraderie and, of course, the stunts for which Top Gear has become famous make compulsive reading. It was whilst filming for Top Gear, driving a jet-powered dragster at speeds over 300mph, that a tyre burst and the car left the track and rolled over, burying him in the earth. He was airlifted to hospital and hovered near death for several days. His wife Mindy tells the story of the anxious hours and days of watching and waiting until he finally emerged from his coma. In an extraordinarily powerful piece of writing, she and Richard then piece together the stages of his recovery as his shattered mind slowly reformed, leaving him sometimes lucid and plausible, sometimes confused and angry, and often exhausted. The final chapter recounts his return home and his triumphant reappearance in front of the cameras.

    What a fascinating book this is! I bought it because I wanted to read his story, but I didn't expect him to actually be able to write, and write well. But he does, and so does Mindy Hammond (wife), who co-wrote the book from her point of view. The book starts off a bit slow, summing up how Richard came to be a speed-loving car-nut, but from the moment he starts talking about the day of the crash I could not put this book down. It kept me up until 4 in the morning for two consecutive nights, and then I just decided I needed to start reading earlier in the evening and finish it because I couldn't lose another night's sleep. Of course, you already know he pulls through, but reading how he and Mindy experienced it is funny, silly, heartbreaking, remarkable and amazing all at the same time. It has left me with a deep respect for both of them as people, as parents and as spouses. I'm sure they've still only scratched the surface with this story in which they seem so strong and loving. A really quick read which will make you laugh and tear up, making you feel like you're in the room with them through the whole ordeal. The family photographs add to the feeling of being let into their life ever so briefly. Not just for Top Gear lovers!

    Geschreven bij On The Edge

    Heel erg interessant boek! Een must read voor elke Hammond fan of wie er gewoonweg interesse in heeft. Het heeft even geduurd voordat ik het boek kocht, paar jaar maar, want ik lees eigenlijk nooit. Het heeft mij een kijk gegeven op de manier hoe een ziekenhuis met patiënten zoals Hammond omgaan. Wat mij vooral bleef hangen was het zinnetje: ''I'm gonna have to cause you some pain'' wanneer Hammond niet reageerde op de observaties. Dit moet wel een erg pijnlijke plek zijn als je iemand ermee uit een coma krijgt. Stiekem wel een paar keer gelachen tijdens de gesprekken over de sigaretten met Mindy, 'hello cockface' en toen hij in de badkamer omviel.
    Verder vind ik dat ook Mindy uitstekend kan schrijven! Ik heb het boek in het engels. Ben geen fan van nederlandse vertalingen, want dat neemt naar mijn idee een heleboel weg uit het verhaal en dit verhaal is echt top. Ben erg blij dat hij helemaal is hersteld en ik had dit boek gewoon moeten kopen toen het uitkwam, maarja :)
