Booth Tarkington

Booth Tarkington (1869-1946), a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, published the first of his many novels, The Gentleman from Indiana, in 1899. He served a single term in Indiana's House of Representatives in 1902-1903. His long and commercially successful literary career was divided between the writing of fiction and plays. Two of his novels, The Magnificent Ambersons and Alice Adams, were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. His Penrod books for young adults were widely popular in their time.

Samenvatting

Penrod, By Booth Tarkington, Brand New Edition, Penrod is a collection of comic sketches by Booth Tarkington that was first published in 1914. The book follows the misadventures of Penrod Schofield, an eleven-year-old boy growing up in the pre-World War I Midwestern United States, in a similar vein to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In Penrod, Tarkington established characters who appeared in two further books, Penrod and Sam (1916) and Penrod Jashber (1929). The three books were published together in one volume, Penrod: His Complete Story, in 1931.
