Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamont died in an asylum in 1893. In the same year Doyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financial problems, Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has suspected in an article, that Doyle's mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a student of pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle. Cette réponse ne me surprit pas ; ce qui m’étonnait bien davantage, c’était qu’Holmes ne se fût pas encore trouvé mêlé à cette affaire si étrange qui, d’un bout à l’autre de l’Angleterre, était devenue le sujet de toutes les conversations. Je l’avais bien vu pendant une journée entière arpenter le salon, le menton incliné sur la poitrine, les sourcils froncés, fumant pipe sur pipe du tabac le plus noir et le plus fort qu’il eût pu trouver et restant absolument sourd à tout ce que je pouvais lui dire. Ce jour-là, nous avions reçu les derniers numéros parus de chaque journal de Londres ; mais mon compagnon y avait à peine jeté les yeux et les avait successivement lancés dans un coin. Cependant, malgré son silence, je savais parfaitement à quoi m’en tenir sur le sujet de ses méditations. Il n’y avait à ce moment qu’un seul problème qui pût l’amener à concentrer ainsi toutes ses facultés d’analyse : c’était la mystérieuse disparition de Silver Blaze, — le cheval célèbre, le grand favori du Wessex Cup — et le meurtre tragique de son entraîneur. Aussi quand il m’annonça brusquement son intention de se rendre sur le théâtre du drame, il ne fit que répondre à mon attente et à mes secrètes espérances.
