I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find relatively little graphic sex -- apart from a few torrid scenes here and there, and one opening encounter that will bring joy and hope to basement-dwelling ubergeeks everywhere. "Succubus Blues" is a very good novel, featuring (obviously) an "alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men." In exchange for their souls, of course, but Georginia Kincaid apparently makes that little trade quite worthwhile in her Seattle stomping grounds.

Georgina's life is troubled, because she can get all the sex she wants but love and romance are largely denied her. Carnal acts -- even really good kisses -- steal life force away, and while Georgina is immortal, it doesn't serve well to deplete and kill the men she loves. So she leads an emotionally vacant life, supplementing her nocturnal duties with a more mundane job as an assistant bookstore manager, hanging out when time allows with a couple of vampire pals, a demon or two and even the occasional angel. Technically, succubi are evil, but Georgina doesn't get too involved with the politics of her job.

But then someone starts killing the people around her, and Georgina finds bigger issues to deal with than romance. Is it an amateur vampire slayer, inspired by the exploits of a popular TV heroine, or is something more sinister at work? And what's a poor succubus to do when the doors of both Heaven and Hell close on her cries for assistance?

Figures that Georgina would suddenly find, not one, but two romantic possibilities in her life.

"Succubus Blues" is a damn fine first book, and Mead can be proud to make such a bold stride into the market. Her protagonist is sexy, appealing, smart and resourceful, but amped-up sensuality isn't much use against the thing stalking the streets of Seattle.

The book is hardly action-packed; Mead moves the story along slowly, spending more time on characters than plot, so adrenaline junkies may be bored. That's a shame, because the characters are extremely well-developed, and the action she provides is certainly worth the wait. Sexaholics may want to avoid this one, too; the sex in this book is mostly of the "tease and titillate" variety, not the graphic stuff you'd expect if Georgina's cleavage-baring dress on the cover was cut just a little lower. The denouement, while not too hard to spot well in advance, is still grist for one good read with plenty left over for a sequel.

Persoonlijk ben ik Succubus Blues gaan lezen omdat ik de schrijfster kende van de Vampire Academy serie. Ik was erg benieuwd naar haar eerdere werk en het viel me absoluut niet tegen.

Ook in dit boek bewijst Richelle Mead haar schrijftalent; het verhaal verloopt vlot, waardoor het boek lekker wegleest en de goed uitgewerkte personages zijn boeiend. Tevens de sarcastische, gevatte humor en een aantal mooie plotwendingen zorgen ervoor dat dit boek erg sterk is. Daarnaast ontbreekt het verhaal ook niet aan romantiek, spanning en drama.

Het boek gaat over Georgina. Ze is een succubus die moet overleven op de energie van mensen, maar vanwege haar sterke gevoel voor moraal werkt ze een beetje om de regels heen. Daarnaast heeft ze een normale baan (in een boekenwinkel) en heeft zowel menselijke als bovennatuurlijke contacten. Terwijl er in het heden diverse complicaties optreden in haar leven, kom je ook steeds meer te weten over Georgina’s verleden.

In tegenstelling tot de Vampire Academy ‘young adult’ boeken, is Succubus Blues meer op volwassenen gericht. Je merkt dit niet alleen aan het taalgebruik, maar ook aan de volwassenere onderwerpen en personages. Het geheel is een stuk minder braaf dan ik persoonlijk gewend was van Richelle Mead.
Dit is het eerste boek uit de Georgina Kincaid serie; het einde blijft dus nog redelijk open. Persoonlijk kijk ik uit naar het volgende deel van de serie, maar je zou wel genoegen kunnen nemen met slechts dit boek mocht het erop aan komen.

Kortom, een sterk verhaal met interessante personages en gevatte humor. Als je van bovennatuurlijke verhalen houdt, is Succubus Blues zeker de moeite waard!

If you are bored of the vampire academy, or of vampires in general.. This book is a really great diversion! It is smart and surprising and full of suspense.
The book is about a demon, a succubus who lives of the life force of men... Through sex. Her name is Georgina Kincaid... She works in a bookstore, falls in love with her favourite author but, can't touch him.
It is an exciting story, with good versus evil or in this case evil against more evil, helped by the good...
It has all the characters, imps, vampires, angels, arch demons and more!

I loved the characters, and this new world full of evil and some good... I like that it was written out of the demon's prospective... Nicely done!! Awesome read!

Als je graag fictie leest met bovennatuurlijke hoofdpersonen (weerwolven, vampieren, etc) dan is dit boek zeker een aanrader! Dit boek heb ik in 1 dag non-stop uitgelezen.
De hoofdpersoon is in dit geval een succubus, wat ik zelf nog nooit was tegengekomen in een boek.
Het tempo van dit boek komt overeen met de boeken van bijv. Kelley Armstrong en Patricia Briggs.

In eerste instantie ben ik dit boek gaan lezen omdat ik de vampire academy serie van Richelle Mead zo geweldig vind. Ik besloot ook deze serie te proberen. En dit boek was zeker het proberen waard. Het bevat een beetje dezelfde schrijfstijl als vampire academy al merk je wel dat dit boek wat eerder geschreven is. Ook is dit boek weer erg origineel, ik heb nog nooit gehoort van een boek over een succubus behalve deze serie. Ook bevat dit boek weer de nodige romantiek en liefde. Maar behalve het liefdes leven van het hoofdpersonage is er ook aandacht voor een mysterieus wezen wat bovennatuurlijke wezens in de stad afslacht. Het boek leest lekker weg en is gewoon een erg leuk fantasierijk en origineel boek.
