‘Talon of the Silver Hawk’ is the first part of the Conclave of Shadows trilogy which takes place after the Serpentwar Saga. It can be enjoyed without having read any of Feist’s previous work, although some (non-essential) references will be lost on those that haven’t. People that have read the Riftwar Saga but not the Serpentwar Saga will experience some gaps in Pug’s and Midkemia’s history, although those are by no means insurmountable obstacles to appreciate this novel. In contrast to some of Feist’s other work this book does not revolve around a dire alien invasion threatening all that is dear to the inhabitants of Midkemia. Rather it describes the personal quest of the mountain boy Talon to seek revenge on those that are to blame for the destruction of his home and family. After being left for dead at the massacre in his village he is taken under the wings of the magician Robert, one of Pug’s close collaborators in the mysterious Conclave of Shadows brotherhood. This first part of the trilogy focusses on how they educate him in the skills required for the retribution that he so desires and his search for the identities of those responsible for his grief. ‘Talon of the Silver Hawk’ makes for a fun little story. It is not a tale that will be remembered as a classic of the fantasy genre the way that ‘Magician’ is: it is simply too unremarkable for that as it is basically a somewhat forgettable and straightforward run-of-the-mill revenge story. Regardless it is still a very entertaining novel with many interesting characters. ‘Talon of the Silver Hawk’ is recommended to all that would like to spend some more time in Midkemia or that are after a light yet likeable fantasy story.Vond je dit een nuttige review?00 -
