The assassin, Jazz Monroe, broke through the entry door to the Warner’s home. He stormed the house on a rampage, killing everyone in his path as he searched for his target, Claire Warner.

Running Bear, her bodyguard, confronted and killed the assassin, but not before Claire had been critically wounded and lay dying with gunshot wounds to her chest and shoulder.

Claire was flown from her ranch in Sonoita, Arizona to a Tucson hospital, and not expected to survive. Her son, also hunted, was placed under protective care arranged by the F.B.I. and entered into a Witness Protection Program with the remaining members of the family. They were given new identities and flown to another part of the country to take up new residence.

Claire was declared dead and buried with an elaborate funeral in the Warner family plot in Sacramento, California. A newspaper reporter, intrigued by the murder of Claire’s mother and the disappearance of her father, refused to let the story go.

Bear received a phone call from the F.B.I. Their pilot was found dead, meaning a rogue pilot flew the family to their new destination. An assassin from the Jersey Hogs gang, he could be anywhere, know their location, and have them under surveillance at this very moment.
