Paul Doyle

Paul Doyle was born and brought up in Hampshire, England, where his youthful excursions around the county helped sow the seeds for his enduring interest in travel. Following a few years working in the aviation industry, a new departure eventually beckoned and he decided to pursue a career as a freelance photographer. He began to work for a variety of public-sector clients, with travel to Arab lands such as Jordan, Lebanon, Libya and Syria fitted into his schedule. His travel photography has subsequently appeared widely in in-flight magazines, books and travel guides both in the UK and overseas. His interest in travel writing developed out of his part-time photography degree, where his earlier social science education had been instrumental in inspiring him to undertake a final year photojournalistic project documenting the reconstruction of post-war Beirut. Following more than 20 years residing in west London, Paul has now decamped back to Hampshire where he hopes that the ongoing reconstruction at his beloved football club, Portsmouth, will lead to a similar change in the club’s fortunes, and that alternate Saturdays spent at Fratton Park may once again become tear free.

Samenvatting

Although only half the size of Wales, Lebanon offers extraordinary diversity. Here, some of the oldest human settlements in the world at the Phoenician ports of Tyre, Sidon and Byblos sit alongside modern Beirut, popular for its cuisine, eclectic nightlife and mosaic of peoples. In Lebanon's second city, Tripoli, busy medieval souks are watched over by a vast Crusader castle. Outside the city, snow-capped mountains and the lush Qadisha Valley with its snaking river and waterfalls provide entertainment for skiers and hikers, while the Mediterranean Sea draws sun and watersports enthusiasts. Bradt's Lebanon provides detailed cultural and practical information to this increasingly popular destination. It also provides in-depth historical and religious background enabling visitors to travel with awareness and sensitivity.
