Dit is een smulboek voor wie van cultuur en of geschiedenis houdt. Je word meegevoerd en zult het niet snel loslaten. Heerlijk voor de winteravonden doe de lampen uit, wat kaarsen en een leeslampje aan en waan je in de wervelende wereld van onze voorvaderen. Je hoeft overigens geen geschiedenisfreak te zijn om dit boek te waarderen!

Het leest als een politieroman maar in dit boek zit de spanning van de eerste tot de laatste bladzijde. Waarom heb ik deze geschiedenis nooit op school gehad.

The best and most informative 2000 year history of northern Europe.
Exceptionally insightful and delightfully written!
It turns out the Dark Ages are not so dark after all. Book brings alive the world of the North Sea, in the twelve-hundred years between the fifth and seventeenth centuries. It was a time of chaos, want, and plague.
We learn about the Frisian marshes, Scandinavian explorers, raiders spreading terror and a growing class of merchants from the Hanseatic trading towns.
The amount of research done by the author is amazing and what makes it so much fun to read is where and how he managed to dig up the documents, personal correspondence and other material used in the book would probably make a book in itself.

Zeer interessante en leuke opsomming van verhalen en anekdotes maar mis samenhang. Door de populaire, soms grappende of spottende toon is het bovendien voor iemand voor wie Engels geen moedertaal is ook af en toe wat moeilijk te begrijpen.
