Een van Nietzsches meest bekende werken is ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’, dat na de Bijbel het meest gelezen boek van de Duitse soldaten aan het front tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog was. In het begin van de twintigste eeuw had Nietzsche veel invloed op diverse Duitse dichters. Nietzsches filosofie werd ook misbruikt door het opkomende nazisme, krachtig gesteund door zijn zus Elisabeth. Zij had namelijk de vrijheid genomen veel van Nietzsches werk te herschrijven, op zodanige manier dat het nazi-vriendelijker werd. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd zijn filosofie 'gedenazificeerd'. In de voormalige DDR waren zijn boeken tot aan de val van de Muur verboden.

The three works in this collection, all dating from Nietzsche's last lucid months, show him at his most stimulating and controversial: the portentous utterances of the prophet (together with the ill-defined figure of the Übermensch) are forsaken, as wit, exuberance and dazzling insights predominate, forcing the reader to face unpalatable insights and to rethink every commonly accepted 'truth'. Thinking with Nietzsche, in Jaspers' words, means holding one's own against him, and we are indeed refreshed and challenged by the vortex of his thoughts, by concepts which test and probe.
In The Twilight of the Idols, The Antichrist, and Ecce Homo Nietzsche writes at breakneck speed of his provenance, his adversaries and his hopes for mankind; the books are largely epigrammatic and aphoristic, allowing this poet-philosopher to bewilder and fascinate us with their strangeness and their daring. He who fights with monsters, Nietzsche once told us, should look to it that he himself does not become one, and when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you. Reader, beware.

Great read
Geschreven bij Twilight of the Idols
The book seems rather small however it features three of Nietzsche's works. All are unique in their own way, Twilight of The Idols hammers through what Nietzsche had opinions about and leaves deep marks. It's a fast, interesting and sometimes funny read. The Antichrist speaks of Nietzsche's hate for Christianity and justifies it perfectly. Meanwhile, Ecce Homo speaks of Nietzsche himself, his thoughts, hate for Germany and even his likes in food. Brilliant.
