Samenvatting
Excerpt from Vauban, Montalembert, Carnot: Engineer Studies
The three essays which form the chief part of this volume, have already appeared in the Quarterly Review, the Royal Engineers' Journal, and the United Service Magazine, respectively. Some portions of the Introduction were included in the new Text-book of Fortification for the use of the Cadets of the Royal Military Academy, issued in 1878; and the last paper, on modem forts, was published in the Journal of the Royal United Service Institution, in 1882.
They are now brought together as illustrating successive stages in the history of fortification and fortress warfare. It is hoped that they may furnish some useful clues to those who care to study that subject in the only way in which it can be studied to much purpose, by going to the fountain heads.
