Samenvatting

Trouble seems to have a way of finding Luke: tagging, stealing, fighting, and skipping school. When his grandfather takes him north for some time out, Luke finds a very different life – living at the end of a dirt road and going to a school where image counts for nothing.

But after a summer term of fishing, bodysurfing and playing touch rugby, his trip back home for the holidays is disappointing. The bullies are still there, Mum never has any money and the city is no fun without it.

Back up north again with his grandfather, a fishing trip turns to disaster and Luke is faced with a terrible choice...

Reviews of ‘Not Even’

“This short, very readable book effectively contrasts the values of city life with those of a small Maori community. Colloquial language and realistic family situations offer street credibility. Recommended.” Bill Nagelkerke in ‘Magpies’.

“A great inspirational New Zealand book.” Kids’ Page, Waitakere Libraries

“A positive, realistic story about family and life in a small rural community.” Jabberwocky Top Ten April 2003: Titles suitable for years/grades 7 and 8[English Online.]
