Helaas is met A Darkness At Sethanon een eind gekomen aan het verhaal over Arutha en z'n gevolg. een hele goede serie welk ik van begin tot eind met heel veel plezier gelezen heb.

One year after his successful intrusion in Moredhel territory to find the antidote for his poisoned fiancée it seems like things could not look any better for Arutha. However, Murmandamus has also had a year to regroup his forces and is not about to wait any longer to fulfill his dreadful calling.

‘A Darkness at Sethanon’ is the conclusion of the Riftwar Saga and the place where the remaining storylines of the saga will be resolved. The buildup of the story is remarkably similar to that of its predecessor ‘Silverthorn’: A rise of Nighthawk activity in Krondor, assassination attempts on Arutha, a raid on the Nighthawk hideout and a covert expedition of a small band-of-brothers to face the enemy on his home turf. Indeed, it seems like the two books could easily have been condensed into a single more focused novel without much loss of information. The principle difference with the previous book is that Arutha’s personal mission to save his fiancée is replaced by the more epic tale of the attempt to halt Murmandamus once and for all. Character development is moved to the backseat in favor of spectacular action sequences, battle scenes and large-scale sieges. Valheru lore is further explored which, although it may be a little juvenile at times, reveals a lot about the nature of the riftwar and sheds new light on some of the events in earlier parts of the series. Unfortunately the out-of-the-blue escape with which the story is resolved feels a bit like a deus ex machina, leaving further explanation to be desired. Clearly the Riftwar Saga was at its best at the start of the series rather than at its ending. Regardless of it all ‘A Darkness at Sethanon’ is an amusing story, even if a somewhat forgettable one.

Raymond E Feist continued his exploration of the Riftwar Universe with the highly enjoyable Empire Trilogy, starting with ‘Daughter of the Empire’.

Na een wat rustiger tweede deel, is dit boek precies wat de serie nodig heeft.
Gebeurd flink wat, en heeft een epische schaal qua orde van grootheid.
Enige minpunt is dat de schrijfstijl enigszins kinderlijk is, het is erg duidelijk wie goed/slecht is, de lezer staat daardoor niet vrij in om te kiezen.
