The early summer sky was the color of cat vomit.
Of course, Tally thought, you’d have to feed your cat only salmon-flavored cat food for a while, to get the pinks right. The scudding clouds did look a bit fishy, rippled into scales by a high-altitude wind. As the light faded, deep blue gasps of night peered through like an upside-down ocean, bottomless and cold.
Any other summer, a sunset like this would have been beautiful. But nothing had been beautiful since Peris turned pretty. Losing your best friend sucks, even if it’s only for three months and two days. (blz. 3)

Tally is 15 jaar en mist haar beste vriend Peris. Hij is pas 16 geworden en heeft zijn operatie gehad om mooi te worden. Hij is nu een ‘pretty’. Daarom woont hij nu aan de andere kant van de rivier. En daar mogen ‘uglies’, kinderen die hun operatie nog niet hebben gehad, niet komen. Tally mist hem zo erg dat ze besluit om stiekem naar New Pretty Town te gaan om hem te zoeken.

Peris was niet heel erg blij om Tally te zien. En om niet ontdekt te worden kon ze niet lang blijven. Op de terugweg naar de andere kant van de rivier ontmoet ze Shay. Ook zij is stiekem in Prettytown en mist haar vrienden. Ze worden vrienden en brengen veel tijd met elkaar door. Shay leert Tally hoe ze moet hoverboarden (een zwevend skateboard). Ze gaan ’s avonds stiekem de stad uit om op onderzoek uit te gaan. Op een dag is Shay verdwenen. Ze is weggelopen, de woestijn in, omdat ze geen Pretty wil worden. Ze heeft Tally wel eens verteld over een verzetsgroep die in de woestijn woont en waar mensen bij horen die tegen de operatie tot Pretty zijn. Tally mist haar vreselijk en voelt zich erg alleen. Eindelijk komt de dag van Tally’s operatie. Maar ze wordt niet naar het ziekenhuis gebracht, maar naar het hoofdkantoor van Specials. Hier wordt ze gemanipuleerd om als spion naar de verzetsgroep te gaan.

Shay heeft een cryptische omschrijving naar de Smokies (de verzetsgroep) voor Tally achtergelaten. Zal het Tally lukken om bij de Smokies te komen? Kan ze Shay overhalen om zich toch te laten opereren? En wordt Tally ook een Pretty?
