Samenvatting
Donegal became the scene of the last standup fight between the IRA and British military with the latter using heavy artillery for the first time in Ireland since 1916. This is the story of the Northern Offensive, organised by both pro- and anti-Treaty IRA, with Michael Collins and Liam Lynch being the chief architects.
Donegal & the Civil War charts events in County Donegal from the start of the Truce in 1921 to the end of the Civil War in 1923. Despite growing tensions between the pro- and anti-Treaty factions of the IRA in early 1922, in Donegal the two sides initially worked together to undermine the authority of the newly established Six County government across the border. The anti-Treaty IRA led this ‘northern offensive’, with the pro-Treaty IRA serving in a support role. However, with the outbreak of the Civil War, the fragile relations in Donegal completely broke down, and the pro-Treaty Free State forces moved quickly to round up and intern their erstwhile allies. By the end of July 1922 the war in Donegal had developed into a game of cat and mouse, with the Free State forces hunting the anti-Treaty IRA from one end of the county to the other.
