Floating Paris

Inspired by a canvas hanging in a Dutch gallery Francis Goodwine, an English journalist from London, decides to quit his job and move to Paris to rekindle a long neglected passion for painting. Working part-time as a translator and living in a friend's apartment while he is away he starts to paint again, choosing the monuments of Paris as a subject for what leads to a new semi-abstract, colourful style. As he tries to get exhibited a number of characters enter the scene including a drinker with painting problems, a sharp-suited engineer who can't stop talking about a 17th century philosopher, a painter of skyscapes and an English teacher with a talent for poetry. Packed with hilarious dialogues, misinterpretations and wry obervations, this short novel provides a snapshot of a city which, although having succumbed to some of the uglier aspects of what is often referred to as 'globilisation', has neverthe less retained its quintessential character.
