Samenvatting

In a famous but declining Hollywood bar works A Barman. Morbidly amused by the decadent decay of his surroundings, he watches the patrons fall into their nightly oblivion, making notes for his novel. In the hope of uncovering their secrets and motives, he establishes tentative friendships with the cast of variously pathological regulars.

But as his tenure at the bar continues, he begins to serve himself more often than his customers, and the moments he lives outside the bar become more and more painful: he loses his wife, his way, himself. Trapped by his habits and his loneliness, he realizes he will not survive if he doesn't break free. And so he hatches a terrible, necessary plan of escape and his only chance for redemption.

    Geschreven bij Ablutions

    In an old bar for Hollywood's losers, a nameless bartender keeps a diary about the sorry state of the mental and physical health of its regulars and of himself. He uses the rarely-used second person style ("You see Jack coming in and hope he... ") and the accusative ("Discuss Brent, the unhappy doorman, who..."). He orders himself to record what he sees, hears and does in order to write, one day when he is sober again, a real novel. As a notebook "Ablutions" is a masterpiece.

    The diarist is a married, tall and skinny white man. During his 6-year career he has begun to hallucinate but always manages to arrive home in his ancient, magical Ford under the police radar. His drink of choice is Jameson's. The inside of his mouth bleeds sometimes, he lost dental chips and once an entire molar while talking to the bar owner's wife (he swallowed it). Apart from indulging in Irish whiskey, he uses speed and has blind faith in the healing powers of massive doses of aspirin.

    When did this book take place? Sometime during the Bush jr era. The earning model of the bar is intriguing. No limits on drinking for staff? Free drinks for awful regulars? Doormen, but a clientele of losers? And the price of drinks is awesome...

    "Ablutions" is a short, but eminently re-readable novel. It contains lots of self-inflicted and suddenly-erupting bits of drama, some quite ugly and repellent. And it has a surprise ending.

    Geschreven bij Ablutions

    In Ablutions zien we een barman afglijden naar een steeds treuriger bestaan, maar de lezer wordt er gelukkig niet treurig van, daarvoor is het te grappig en te mooi beschreven. Er gebeurt eigenlijk niet heel veel in de kansloze bar waar hij werkt - het menselijk wrakhout spoelt aan, bietst en zuipt en ebt weer weg - maar het blijft boeien, dankzij de geweldige stijl van DeWitt.
