Roddy Doyle

"Roddy Doyle (born 8 May 1958) is an Irish novelist, dramatist and screenwriter. He is the author of eleven novels for adults, eight books for children, seven plays and screenplays, and dozens of short stories. Several of his books have been made into films, beginning with The Commitments in 1991. Doyle's work is set primarily in Ireland, especially working-class Dublin, and is notable for its heavy use of dialogue written in slang and Irish English dialect. Doyle was awarded the Booker Prize in 1993 for his novel Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.

Samenvatting

[No one] can match Doyle for the fluency with which he tacks back and forth between the hilarious and the heartbreaking. -- The New York Times Book Review

Roddy Doyle has won acclaim for his wry wit, his uncanny ear, and his remarkable ability to fully capture the voices and hearts of his characters. Bullfighting, his second collection of stories, offers a series of bittersweet takes on men and middle age, revealing a panorama of Ireland today. Moving from classrooms to graveyards, from local pubs to bullrings, these tales of taking stock and reliving past glories feature men concerned with loss--of their place in the world, of their power, virility, health, and ability to love.

  • Warm, sad, funny collection of stories about Irishmen's midlife crisis

Short stories are OK. But collections of one author’s stories in book form are often not. They contain some good stories plus experiments, edible parts from abandoned novels, youth memories, and they always lack a common theme. Roddy Doyle’s collection “Bull Fighting” is a paradigm for publishers to improve on past practice.
RD’ s stories are mostly short and tackle the midlife crisis of ordinary Irish men, some as young as 41 or 42. They are written in short sentences and the dialogues are great, as if written for TV or film. They deal with male fears and focus on what they think went wrong during the first half of their lives.
Anxiety of men who believe they are past their prime is the theme of this collection. The stories are often trenchant and funny. Occasionally the credit crisis, scandals within Roman Catholic institutions, arrival of Eastern European workers (and their mass return, leaving their clunker cars behind at Dublin airport) are mentioned, adding to the confusion of some of the stories’ heroes. Older Irish choose to lose contact with former friends, stay at home rather than visiting pubs: if married they do not talk much any longer. Many meet only during funerals, plenty of which are described in this beautiful collection. Each story is a gem!
This is a warm, rich, often funny and compassionate book full of stories about insecure Irish men worrying about what their parents, spouses and children think of them. No doubt similar collections are feasible throughout the Eurozone, the US and Britain, but the first writer to emulate or improve on Roddy Doyle’s wonderful collection has to emerge yet. Highly recommended, a grand book.
