Goethe
Johann Wolfgang Goethe was born in 1749. He studied at Leipzig, where he showed interest in the occult, and at Strassburg, where Herder introduced him to Shakespeare's works and to folk poetry. He produced some essays and lyrical verse, and at twenty-four came to fame as part of the Sturm und Drang movement - a position established on the publication of The Sorrows of Young Werther. Goethe worked on Faust throughout his life, while travelling through Italy and returning to Weimar, where he directed the State Theatre. He died in 1832.

Aquí, un alma bella es aquella que tiende al bien por sí misma, por naturaleza y sin aparente esfuerzo ni contradicción consigo misma. Se trata de una categoría moral, pero que se expresa con terminología estética: unir lo bello y lo bueno, según el viejo ideal griego, superando la escisión entre naturaleza y libertad. Desde este punto de vista, es interesante señalar que las «bellas almas» suelen ser mujeres, que reconcilian inclinación y deber, naturaleza y libertad, pero no para sí mismas, sino especularmente para el varón que se ve reflejado en ellas, y que escribe «bellas» obras literarias.
