Jan Smets is aan de Gentse universiteit afgestudeerd in de economische wetenschappen. Hij werkte het grootste deel van zijn loopbaan in de Nationale Bank, waar hij begon als expert in het Departement Studiën. Na een korte overstap naar de politiek in 1988, keert hij weer naar de Nationale Bank in 1994. Hij wordt directeur in 1999, een mandaat dat telkens verlengd wordt tot 2018. Daarna wordt hij gouverneur van de Nationale Bank tot eind 2018. Naast zijn drukke loopbaan heeft Smets steeds geschreven.
