Nicholas Charles Sparks werd op 31 december 1965 geboren in Omaha, Nebraska, als de tweede zoon van Patrick Michael en Jill Emma Marie Sparks. Als kind heeft hij in Minnesota, Los Angeles en Grand Island, Nebraska gewoond, voordat hij met zijn familie op achtjarige leeftijd in Fair Oaks, Califonië belandde. In 1984 behaalde hij zijn diploma van de middelbare school als valedictorian, de beste student uit zijn jaar. Hij ontving vervolgens een volledige studiebeurs voor de Universiteit van Notre Dame in de Verenigde Staten.
Na het verbreken van het schoolrecord als onderdeel van het estafette team, raakte Sparks gewond. Tijdens zijn revalidatieproces begon hij met het schrijven van zijn eerste boek, hoewel dat nooit uitgegeven werd. Sparks studeerde cum laude af in Business Finance in 1988, waarna hij zijn vrouw Catherine ontmoette tijdens een vakantie. Ze trouwden in juli 1989. Hij schreef een tweede boek, dat ook niet werd gepubliceerd. Sparks had in de jaren daarna de meest uiteenlopende banen tot hij op 28-jarige leeftijd in zes maanden tijd The Notebook schreef. Hierna volgden nog vele verhalen. In oktober 2015 kwam zijn achttiende boek, See Me, uit. Niet alleen zijn boeken zijn een groot succes, ook zijn films doen het erg goed. In 2016 is alweer zijn elfde boek verfilmd.
