Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamont died in an asylum in 1893. In the same year Doyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financial problems, Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has suspected in an article, that Doyle's mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a student of pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle. Samenvatting

El relato policial nunca volvió a ser el mismo después de que Sir Arthur Conan Doyle creara a Sherlock Holmes y al Doctor Watson. Publicada en 1890, "El signo de los cuatro" es la segunda novela protagonizada por el célebre detective del 221 B Baker Street. Se trata —junto a "Estudio en escarlata", "El sabueso de los Baskerville" y "El valle del terror"— de una de las cuatro únicas novelas que Arthur Conan Doyle escribió con Holmes como protagonista, ya que el resto de sus obras acerca de este personaje son relatos cortos.

En Inglaterra, a fines del siglo diecinueve, Mary Morstan es una joven que ha vivido durante diez años con la incertidumbre de la desparición inexplicable de su padre, un militar retirado que había servido en la India, en una campaña militar del ejército inglés.

Sin embargo, la joven recibe una extraña carta que menciona que hay alguien que tiene información sobre el destino de su padre, el Capitán Morstan.
