Part three of the groundbreaking Hyperion Cantos, from the Hugo and World Fantasy Award-winning author of The Terror, which is now a chilling TV show.

Two hundred and seventy-four years after the fall of the WorldWeb in Fall of Hyperion, Raoul Endymion is sent on a quest. Retrieving Aenea from the Sphinx before the Church troops reach her is only the beginning. With help from a blue-skinned android named A. Bettik, Raoul and Aenea travel the river Tethys, pursued by Father Captain Frederico DeSoya, an influential warrior-priest and his troops. The shrike continues to make enigmatic appearances, and while many questions were raised in Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion, still more are raised here. Raoul's quest will continue.

  • Third part of the Hyperion saga

It is 274 years after the Pilgrimage and the time that Aenea, Brawne Lamia’s daughter, will emerge from the time portal of the Time Tombs that she entered not long after the Fall of the Farcasters. Aenea is the One Who Teaches prophesized in the cantos. Most importantly, the church which has become an institution of power after having adopted the religion of the Cruciform sees her as a threat. They set out to intercept her, something that the hero-in-the-making Raul Endymion wants to prevent at all costs as the destiny of humankind becomes linked to that of the 12 year old girl …

This novel is written as a first person account of Raul Endymion who writes down his narrative while awaiting his death sentence. He details how he and Aenea eluded capture by the church’s forces. He also hints at the supposed incredible powers of Aenea, her rise to messiahship and great battles fought to get there. However, these are not part of this tale which instead consists of the intergalactic chase following Aenea’s emergence from the Time Tombs. Compared to the previous two action-packed books in the Hyperion saga the tale is unfolded at a slower pace, offering more breathing space. This may require some getting used to initially, but if one is able to get passed this ‘Endymion’ does offer a very rewarding read. The Hyperion universe is expanded upon with sufficient new ideas and inventiveness to keep it interesting. However, the appeal of this novel comes mostly from the proficient writing style of Dan Simmons who again demonstrates that he is able to create very engaging characters. He successfully manages to create sympathy for all parties, both for Raul, his companions and their pursuers, raising genuine compassion and concern for their fates.

Even though this work is really more an intermediate piece between the Hyperion books and ‘Rise of Endymion’ it is nonetheless a must for anyone that enjoyed the Hyperion novels.
