Graphene-based nanocomposites are one of the major advancement in polymer-based materials. The synthesis, nanoscale dimensions, high aspect ratio, mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of graphene and its derivative have all been major areas of research in the last decade. Nanocomposites are novel materials with significantly enhanced properties owing to the integration of small amount (< 5 wt.%) of nanoparticles, such as metal nanoparticles, metal oxides nanostructures, carbon nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes, graphene and graphene oxide into a polymer matrix.

In recent years, several methods have been developed to produce graphene. The reduction of graphene derivatives, such as graphene oxide, shows potential for the cost-effective production of graphene sheets in the bulk quantities that are necessary for application to nanocomposites. The functionalization technique is critical in the creation of graphene nanocomposites.
