Guy de Maupassant

Guy de Maupassant was born in Normandy in 1850. At his parents’ separation he stayed with his mother, who was a friend of Flaubert. As a young man he was lively and athletic, but the first symptoms of syphilis appeared in the late 1870s. By this time Maupassant had become Flaubert’s pupil in the art of prose. On the publication of the first short story to which he put his name, ‘Boule de suif’, he left his job in the civil service and his temporary alliance with the disciples of Zola at Médan, and devoted his energy to professional writing. In the next eleven years he published dozens of articles, nearly three hundred stories and six novels, the best known of which are A Woman’s Life, Bel-Ami and Pierre and Jean. He led a hectic social life, lived up to his reputation for womanizing and fought his disease. By 1889 his friends saw that his mind was in danger, and in 1891 he attempted suicide and was committed to an asylum in Paris, where he died two years later.

Samenvatting

Jacques Bourdillère, un célibataire endurci, est tombé sous le charme d’une jeune fille (de son pied plus précisément) en la voyant se baigner dans l’eau. Il tombe amoureux et la demande en mariage. Mais les parents ne sont pas immédiatement d’accord à cause de sa réputation de bon viveur et de sa maîtresse.

Il rompt avec elle qui, désespérée, lui écrit beaucoup de lettres, des lettres qu’il ne lit pas et n’ouvre pas. Il se fait une vie rangée, et le printemps suivant sa demande est acceptée.

Le soir du mariage, en rentrant dans la chambre nuptiale, il reçoit un courrier très urgent. Un docteur lui écrit qu’une femme : Mme Ravet (son ancienne maîtresse) vient d’accoucher d’un enfant qui est le sien, et que la mère va mourir : elle lui demande un dernier service.

Quand il arrive, elle est en train de mourir, tuée par une hémorragie que la glace dont on l'a entourée ne parvient pas à stopper. Elle lui jure que son enfant est le sien et meurt quelques heures plus tard, apaisée par la promesse qu’il lui a faite de s’occuper de l’enfant.

Quand il rentre à cinq heures du matin, l’air inquiet, il avoue tout à sa femme qui lui répondit : « Eh bien, nous élèverons ce petit ensemble ».
