‘Magician’, the first of three books in the Riftwar Saga, was split up and published in two parts in the US, this book being the first and ‘Magician: Master’ the second. This first part sets the stage for the Riftwar Saga and the world of Midkemia that Feist has revisited many times in later serials, totaling over 25 books to date. Some of the later work is oft criticized for being repetitive and of inferior quality. ‘Magician’ on the other hand is very absorbing and has rightfully become a classic in the epic fantasy genre since its first publication in the 1980s. Midkemia is a world rich in traditional fantasy elements (elves, dwarves, dragons, etc.) and indeed with this book the Riftwar Saga seems pretty much like a traditional coming-of-age fantasy story. However, rest assured that there are some very interesting twists up ahead in the sequel. ‘Magician: Apprentice’ takes ample time to carefully introduce the characters and to develop their role in the history of Midkemia, creating a large cast of likeable individuals. Feist’s love and care for them radiates from the pages, making ‘Magician’ a very charming and irresistible novel.

This book requires the follow-up ‘Magician: Master’ for any kind of closure, but it will be well worth it!

Ik kon dit boek niet wegleggen maar pakte het steeds opnieuw. In 1 adem uitgelezen. Heb deel 2 en 3 inmiddels besteld. Kan niet wachten tot ze er zijn.

The first book of the trilogy is really remarkable. The author is taking to a journey to the two different worlds and through the eyes of several loving characters.
The story line is almost cinematic, a real page-turner this book with lots of twists in the plot.
I really enjoyed the story of Pug and his friends and the first book made me to commit to the rest of the books in the trilogy.

Heel leuk boek!
Je moet er alleen heel even in komen, maar dat is bij de meesten boeken van Feist.
Aanrader als je van fantasy boeken houd.

Ik lees dit boek nu, 20 jaar later en nadat ik inmiddels deze hele serie heb gelezen, voor de 2e keer. Het is nog net zo boeiend als de eerste keer dat ik het las.
