William Bell

William Bell is één van die soul-zangers, die
niettegenstaande zijn capaciteiten altijd in de schaduw van Otis Redding is blijven staan. Bell wordt
eerder dan Redding onder contract genomen door Stax, waar hij vanaf '61 regelmatig zijn
gospelgetinte soulballads doet verschijnen. Geboren in Memphis in '39 begint hij te zingen in het
plaatselijke kerkkoor, dat hij al snel verwisselt voor de heidense vocalgroup The Del-Rios. Eind '61
komt hij terecht bij Stax, waar hij o.l.v. Chips Moman het bij insiders beroemde 'You Don't Miss
Your Water' opneemt, dat het tot de onderste helft van de Top-100 brengt. Daarna verschijnt het
niet minder bekende 'Do Right Woman', dat later zo prachtig door The Flying Burrito Brothers
wordt gecoverd. Met het geoliede Stax-huisorkest van Booker T. and The MG's maakt hij daarna
nog vele fraaie ballads, waaronder 'Everybody Loves A Winner' en een ode aan de dan net
overleden Otis Redding, 'Tribute To A King' geheten. In de jaren '67 en '68 heeft William het
meeste succes met enkele pittige duetten met Judy Clay, zoals 'Private Number' en 'My Baby
Specialises'. De zeventiger jaren beginnen zowel artistiek als commercieel wat minder florissant
voor William met enkele 'experimentele' elpees, maar sinds '73 bevindt hij zich weer op
bekender terrein met albums vol met echte soulballads, Memphis Style, met als nieuw
hoogtepunt het in '77 verschenen Coming Back For More.
