Rupert Holmes
houdt elke relatie met het Britse eiland op. Wat Rupert betreft is Amerika en met name New York
het centrum van de muze. Aan de Manhattan School Of Music studeert hij klarinet en compositie.
Gedurende zijn vrije uren speelt hij bas in een rock & roll-band. Als hij 20 jaar is, kijkt hij
al terug op een succesvolle carrière in de muziekbiz. Zo zingt en speelt hij mee op ontelbare
bubblegum-platen en arrangeert hij songs voor Gene Pitney, The Drifters, The Platters en Andy
Kim. Ook als songschrijver oogst hij redelijk veel succes. De Top 10-hit 'Timothy' van The Buoys
vloeit moeiteloos uit zijn pen en het is duidelijk dat deze jongeman een solocarrière ambieert. Zijn
eerste elpee Widescreen, mede-geproduceerd door Jeffrey Lester, bevat prettig in het gehoor
liggende songs waarvan tekst en arrangement zo op elkaar zijn afgestemd dat er haast een visueel
beeld ontstaat. Vandaar ook de titel. Rupert Holmes is duidelijk minder. Single luidt zijn vertrek bij
Epic in en de plaat is dan ook niets meer dan een perfecte demo-band waarvan artiesten als
Dionne Warwick en Johnny Mathis de vruchten plukken. Rupert is namelijk ook zakenman en de
rits artiesten die hij produceert is eindeloos. Vooral Engelse groepen, zoals Strawbs, Sailor en John
Miles maken van zijn diensten gebruik. Vlak voor de release van Pursuit Of Happiness, een plaat
die opnieuw niet in de schaduw van Widescreen kan staan, werkt hij mee als songschrijver aan de
Barbra Streisand-film A Star Is Born. Eerder produceert hij voor Barbra de elpee 'Lazy Afternoon'.
Met Partners In Crime is Rupert plotseling volop in de belangstelling, want die plaat bevat in de
vorm van 'Escape' een Amerikaanse nummer één-hit. Volkomen terecht, want Rupert is terug
naar de basis: korte popsongs die door het gebruik van filmachtige arrangementen haast sketches
worden. Adventure is niet slecht, maar klinkt overgeproduceerd.
