Ashley Little
ASHLEY LITTLE received a BFA in Creative Writing and Film Studies from the University of Victoria and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. Her book
The New Normal won the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize, and
Anatomy of a Girl Gang won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, was a finalist for the City of Vancouver Book Award, longlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and has been optioned for television.
Confessions of a Teenage Leper is Ashley's fifth novel. Ashley lives in British Columbia with her partner, their daughter, and her toy poodle, Huxley.
Ashley Little’s follow-up to Anatomy of a Girl Gang (Arsenal), her 2013 novel that won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize at the British Columbia Book Prize, and was longlisted for the €100,00 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
Set in the mid-1990s, the novel’s protagonist is an 11-year-old boy named Tucker, who is forced into a youth group home when his single mother Gina, an exotic dancer, is hospitalized after being hit by a car. He thinks finding his long-lost father – Sam Malone, who runs a bar in Boston -- will solve everything, so he escapes from the foster home with his new friend, 16-year-old Meredith, and embarks on a cross-country odyssey to find him, only to witness the raw trauma of American life, culminating in the Rodney King race riots in LA.
This is a novel for adults, though mature teens will appreciate it.
Of course, there have been many classic adult novels written with child protagonists: To Kill a Mockingbird; Life of Pi. Tucker is a compelling creation – a wise old soul with an open heart. (Young actor Jacob Tremblay of Room who would be perfect in the film version!)
