Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist who established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection. His theory was first published in 1859, in his book On the Origin of Species. His theory is now accepted by the general public and can be seen as the beginning of modern understanding of evolution.

The author's controversial theory of natural selection, or survival of the fittest, would make him internationally famous and ut the issue of evolution at the centre of a fierce debate which still rages some 150 years after the book's first publication. Complementing the text are over 100 delicately detailed and informative contemporary illustrations, many of them relating to the discoveries Darwin made during the second voyage of the research ship, H.M.S. Beagle. The text used for this edition was the last to be published during Darwin's lifetime and is considered to be the definitive version.
