Gil Martins, an agent with the FBI’s Domestic Terrorism Unit in Houston, confronts the violence generated by extremism within our nation’s borders every day. He sees hatred and destruction wrought by every kind of ?ism” there is, and the zealots who kill in their names. Until now, he has always been a part of the solution?however imperfect?a part of justice. But when Gil discovers he played a key role in wrongly condemning an innocent man to death row, it shakes his faith?in the system, in himself, and in God?deeply. It even estranges him from his wife and son.
Desperate, Gil offers up a prayer. To know God is there, not through a sign or physical demonstration but through the strength to cope with his ever-growing, ever-creeping doubts.
His problems become more than personal as things heat up in Houston. A serial killer terrorizing the morally righteous turns out to have religious motivations, upping the case from homicide to domestic terrorism. A number of prominent secular icons die or are grievously injured abruptly and under suspicious circumstances, the latest of which is a New Atheist writer who’s fallen into an inexplicable coma. Left and right, it seems Gil can’t escape the power of God and murder.
As Gil investigates both cases, he realizes that there may be a connection?answering his prayers in a most terrifying way.

Disappointing

Gave up on his “Research” after 50 pp and consigned it to a small pile of books for harsh winters. Was it bad? Not really. It was Kerr’s chattiness and hovering between genres that killed my appetite, a pity because earlier writers with fewer skills and digital help succeeded in doing just that.
In “Prayer” he probes into his own Catholic Scots upbringing via Giles (‘Gil’) Martin, who emigrated from Scotland to the US with his parents in 1990, graduated from Harvard and now works for the FBI in Houston, TX. After years of investigating unspeakable violence, Gil has lost his faith in God and all that comes with it. He has not seen any case of divine intercession, only senseless slaughter and bloody mayhem. Gil fears germs and always carries a gel with him to keep at least his hands clean. The start of a marital crisis with deeply religious wife Ruth begins when he is assigned to a new case whilst also receiving an urgent request from an Irish priest to investigate why his atheist friend and author Philip Osborn has ended in a psychiatric ward, not responding to drugs or therapy. At work Gil to ordered to find an unusual serial killer, one who terminates really good people who have been working abroad or at home for the poor and vulnerable. Priest Coogan gives Gil his Internet files of other, similar cases of people turning suddenly catatonic, immune to treatment.
Underpinned with plenty of excellent research on Christianity, US law enforcement, IT, Houston and the state of Texas. But also wordy and formulaic, with everyone talking the same aggressive way, full of the f* and s* words and their permutations. [Why so much cliché swearing in a book describing a struggle between faith and atheism?] No doubt written with the best intentions, I myself, not sqeamish by nature decided on p.160, after the taxing, overlong 14th chapter, that I had enough for now.
