This timeless 1964 police procedural by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö (S&W) is a true classic and a feast to reread. It is the first of a series of 10 novels completed in 1976 with Martin Beck (MB) as chief detective. He explains his key rules for crime investigation and presents himself as a non-assertive head of a family of four, who eats and sleeps badly and smokes a lot. He hates crowds, driving (in) cars, flying, taking the subway. But he is quite systematic and sharp when murder is at stake.
S&W were inspired by Georges Simenon and Ed McBain, wildly popular writers in Europe in the 1960-1980s about murder squads opening up a bit about their private lives. All 10 S&W's books are police procedurals, alert to tunnel vision, methodical, casting the net wide, relying on pre-DNA forensic medicine. The books can be read separately.
What was new about the series? It began in book 3, questioning the role of the police in a democracy, with its army roots and poor role during WW II, its violence against protesters and its patrol car cops having an average IQ of 93. In later books this theme takes up ever more space. To leftist readers in the 1970s, S&W pictured and confirmed a dismal functioning of the welfare state. S&W created the Scandinavian school of crime writing in which the police do not solve deep social problems, but often exacerbate them...
"Roseanne" is a gem and a great introduction to S&W's universe.
