Samenvatting

The future is a grim place in which the declining human population wanders drugged and lulled by electronic bliss. It's a world without art, reading and children, a world that people would rather burn themselves alive than endure.

Even Spofforth, the most perfect machine ever created, cannot bear it and seeks only that which he cannot have - to cease to be. But there is hope for the future in the passion and joy that a man and woman discover in love and in books, hope even for Spofforth.

A haunting novel, reverberating with anguish but also celebrating love and the magic of a dream.

  • What may happen when people stop thinking for themselves

Spofforth is the last Make Nine Robot equipped with the altered copy of a human brain. He is tired of living, but is programmed to stay alive as long as there are human beings. In order to recover the erased parts of his memory he hires Bentley, a man who taught himself how to read, to transcribe antique silent movies.

The point of view in this book switches between Spofforth, Bentley and Mary Lou, a libertine whom Bentley teaches how to read. The parts about the latter two are written in the form of diary entries, depicting a future society of dogmatic individualism where everyone uses drugs that turn them into listless zombies unfamiliar with feelings and emotions. Nearly all knowledge about history and science has disappeared and almost everybody is illiterate.

‘Mockingbird’ is a warning about the danger of relying too much on unthinking machines. However, the society that it portrays is so far-fetched that the message just misses target. Disbelief about the deplorably primitive state of humanity becomes predominating and increasingly a distraction that impedes from relating to the characters. Only about halfway through the book are some cautious attempts taken at explaining the childish naïveté of future mankind and it never becomes very persuasive. On a smaller scale there are also a number of things that are not completely plausible. For instance, how can one learn to read without a basic understanding of the concept of letters and alphabet? The characters stay bland throughout most of the story, although it could be argued that this is intentional to reflect the level of human indoctrination. Still, it prevents from sympathizing with them which may well result in a feeling of indifference as they meander on through the story.

It has to be said that ‘Mockingbird’ does have an interesting premise and the feelings of loneliness and desolation are genuinely tangible. Indeed, this is a decent novel albeit a somewhat forgettable one.
