The fact that Saga is an amazing series, and perhaps the best comic running, is beyond debate. This review will strictly deal with the Hardcover itself, because it is a well known fact that the series is a five star masterpiece. The Hardcover features baby Hazel breastfeeding and it is as beautiful as it is controversial. It also serves as an excellent litmus test for the series itself, because if you're offended by this cover than don't bother diving in because Saga isn't for you. It is a series for grown ups with its tone ranging from raunchy, to brutal, to sensual, to serious, but always, always mature, in one way or another.

The Book itself is very well made, which is a relief for collectors, and a boon for the budget conscious. You're getting 18 glorious issues totaling in 504 pages, including extras, in a beautiful and well made package.
All in all, the Saga Deluxe Edition Hardcover, volume 1, is an excellent product for an amazing price. If you've always wanted to read the series, this is the perfect jumping on vehicle. If you're a die hard fan, you already own and love this book. If you already own the three paperback and aren't a die hard fan though, know that the extras, while great, are slight, and it is up to you whether or not they're worth thirty extra dollars. That nitpick aside, the Saga Deluxe Edition Hardcover, volume one, is an amazing product and an unquestionable buy.

Incredible series. I'd refer you to Vol 1 for a sense of the plot, but it's really a (very) mature tale of starcrossed lovers in a war-torn space opera.

This book is like nothing else out there. Volume 4 continues strong. The first chapter opens rather bleakly, instilling a sense of dread in the reader as they plow forward. But Vaughn and Staples zig when you expect a zag. Not only that, but the supporting cast keeps expanding, and each new and returning member is just as fascinating as the next in both design and writing.

Staples art remains top-notch, while this may be Vaughn's best writing to date, which says something for such an accomplished author. The narrative structure of Hazel relating her family's past to us from the margins manages to interject humor, sorrow, and some profundity to the book. The world-building gets ever-stronger while never losing sight of the characters at the core. Everything makes a weird sort of sense, and each act follows the next, like dominoes collapsing one after the other.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that the extras are seemingly saved for the Deluxe Edition, but if you're simply a trade-waiter eager for your next hit of Vaughn and Staples' addictive series, this is for you.

If you love Saga as so many people do, this volume - the fifth - will not disappoint. The writer/artist team of Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples once again delivers an outstanding, original and vividly-depicted story that engages the reader mentally, visually and emotionally that few comics can aspire to.The characters are beautiful, warm, hilarious, and simultaneously heartbreaking, tragic, and sometimes even horrifying.
This volume, picking up shortly after where the last one left off, begins as always with Hazel giving a bit of narrative, this time about the early days of the Wreath/Landfall War, and then cutting to the present where the renegade robot Dengo has Hazel, her mother Alana and and her grandmother as prisoners as he tries to figure out what to do with Hazel. And what to do with Prince Robot IV's infant son, whom he also abducted. Meanwhile, Gwendolyn, The Brand and Sophie are on another world, along with Lying Cat and The Brand's dog, trying to find a cure for The Will, and Prince Robot IV and Marko are in The Stalk's ship, along with Ghus and Yuma, trying to track down Dengo so they can rescue their respective families. After that, things get kinda weird.Family, love, magic, fighting, space travel, sex!!! Great story, awesome backgrounds!! It has everything!!!! Recommended to 100%. Awesome reading and excellent entertainment

How can I rate this, when volume one was a full 5 stars, but the series only gets better? Gah! 10 stars from me.

Het is een leuke stripboek.
Ik heb al het vijfde deel van deze serie in mijn boekenkast staan.
Soms moet ik nog wel even wennen aan de rare/aparte tekeningen die er in staan haha.

Heel leuke vervolg op de leuke serie! Blijft spannend en goed geschreven/getekend.

I'm just gonna leave the same review for all 9 volumes (I reach each one) because they ALL deliver the same super high quality set in the first issue. Saga is an anti-capitalist, anti-colonial, anti-racist, anti-war story about love, family, and sacrifice. It's compelling and beautiful, and so *so* heartbreaking. I literally could not put them down. Best comic series I have *ever* read.
