Percy Bysshe Shelley

Percy Bysshe Shelley was born in 1792 and published his first volume of poetry in 1809. He was expelled from Oxford University for his distributing a pamphlet entitled “The Necessity of Atheism.” Four months later, he eloped with and married Harriet Westbrook but later left her for Mary Wollstonecraft, future author of Frankenstein. Shelley was working on his last major poem, “The Triumph of Life,” when he was drowned in Italy in 1822, aged twenty-nine.

Samenvatting

This volume provides a generous selection of his poetry, from the sonnet 'Ozymandias' to famous lyrics such as 'Ode to the West Wind' and 'Lines Written among the Euganean Hills', to the longer poems of his maturity, Adonais and Epipsychidion, all thoroughly annotated and presented in chronological order.

  • extremely bad selection

Shelley is known for his lyrical poetry, but also for his political views, his atheism, his stance on violence in protest..... in my opinion any selection should include Queen Mab, and the full prologue to Hellas (not simply the last stance). Where is Prometheus Unbound? How can you call this a collection of his work without even mentioning The Revolt of Islam? Even as a starter guide to Shelley this book is at best a very bad collection, at worst downright censorship of one of the greatest poets in history.
