Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamont died in an asylum in 1893. In the same year Doyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financial problems, Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has suspected in an article, that Doyle's mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a student of pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle. Samenvatting

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes contains four of Conan Doyle's own all-time favorite Holmes mysteries, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Red-Headed League, A Scandal in Bohemia, and The Five Orange Pips. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes has another three of Conan Doyle's favorites in The Adventure of the Reigate Squire, The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual, and The Adventure of the Final Problem. It is in The Final Problem, of course, that Dr. Watson sadly reports the death of Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls near Meiringen in Switzerland. Holmes's titanic struggle with his arch enemy, Professor Moriarty, had seen them both apparently plunge over a sheer drop, although Watson never actually saw Holmes's body. This was Conan Doyle's attempt to bring an end to Holmes's adventures, but he was to be resurrected by popular demand eight years later. The Memoirs also includes The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter, in which Holmes's brother, Mycroft, appears for the first time and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott, in which Holmes describes to Watson his very first case.

    Ik heb de hardcover gekocht en er nooit spijt van gekregen, niets is beter dan een Sherlock Holmes korte verhaal te lezen, zelfs een welbekend verhaal opnieuw lezen levert steeds weer nieuwe details.

    Deze editie heeft alle 56 canon kort verhalen, maar niet de 4 novels. De hardcover zou anders ook te dik worden, de 4 verhalen zijn te koop en samengebundeld in een aprte hardcover.

    Geschreven bij Original Illus Strand Sherlock Holmes

    Het kan niet anders dan dat de verhalen van Sherlock van een hoog niveau zijn. Ik heb ze dan ook heel graag gelezen. Het is een leuke omslag en voor zover ik weet de goedkoopste manier om al deze verhalen aan te kopen. Deze prijs brengt wel een negatiever puntje met zich mee, namelijk dat de papieren nogal dun zijn.
