The second volume in Raymond E. Feist’s highly acclaimed epic fantasy Riftwar Saga

With the Kingdom of the Isles at peace, Prince Arutha can at last look forward to marrying the Princess Anita in the city of Krondor.

But the capital in the west harbours many shadows. When Jimmy the Hand, a young thief in the Guild of Mockers, upsets an assassination attempt on Arutha, a sinister plot is uncovered.

As the dead rise and assassins stalk the darkness, Arutha must rally the Kingdom forces swiftly if he is to save his beautiful princess felled by a poisoned arrow on her wedding day, and prevent a madman from destroying Midkemia.

  • Topboekie!

Ik ben fan van de Feist series. Ik vond dat deze een beetje traag opstart maar het is een mooie inleiding naar Darkness over Serhanon!

  • The Riftwar Saga, book two of three.

After the war with Kelewan a period of relative tranquility and rebuilding followed in Midkemia, but a year after the closing of the rift the Moredhel activity increases and Arutha falls victim to several attempts on his life. The time of peace is over once again.

‘Silverthorn’ mostly follows the exploits of Arutha, now prince of Krondor. The rift between Midkemia and Kelewan has been closed and the war with Kelewan is over. Throughout the majority of the story the connection between this book and its predecessor ‘Magician’ is modest and it seems that what binds them is more the common cast list than it is any overarching plot. Also, whereas ‘Magician’ interlaced many different storylines this book is far more straightforward. Initially ‘Silverthorn’ will not seem like a very epic tale as it resembles a Sleeping Beauty story when in Arutha’s stead his fiancée Anita is poisoned in a botched assassination attempt. A cat and mouse game ensues with the prince of Krondor seeking the antidote that can only be found smack in the middle of the enemy’s territory. Later on the stakes will be increased when on the backdrop of this personal tragedy a (somewhat stereotypical) tale develops of good versus an ultimate evil that aims for total destruction of Midkemia. In this respect the storytelling is less remarkable as it was in ‘Magician’. At the same time the book is more terrifying than its predecessor and even a bit wittier, mostly on account of the comings and goings of Jimmy the Hand. However, the chief reason to read this novel would simply be to embark on another adventure with the charming characters that have become so beloved since the start of the riftwar.

While ‘Magician’ could be read as a stand-alone novel, by continuing with ‘Silverthorn’ one is also committed to the sequel ‘A Darkness at Sethanon’.

  • Nice reading and continuation of the trilogy

    Positieve punten

    • Fantasierijk
    • Grappig
    • Spannend

    Negatieve punten

    • Lelijke uitvoering

The book is a nice reading, but is lacking in style compared to the first book. The writing style of the author seems to be in haste in this book, quickly moving scenes and story line to reach to the more interesting part of the book about Pug.
Nevertheless, it is a welcome continuation to the trilogy with lots of magical action as well
