Wilkie Collins

"Wilkie Collins (Londen, 8 januari 1824 – aldaar, 23 september 1889) was een Britse schrijver en een tijdgenoot en vriend van Charles Dickens. Collins was een veelschrijver en publiceerde ook in Dickens' tijdschriften Household Words en All the Year Round. Hij geniet de meeste bekendheid als schrijver van de romans The Woman in White (1860) en The Moonstone (1868), beide voorlopers van de detectiveroman.

Samenvatting

Wilkie Collins was an English writer, a founder of the “sensational” novel that divided to adventure and detective genre. He was an admitted master of intrigue and exciting plot with a comprehensive description of the character’s psychology. In his novels Wilkie kept up the gothic way of narration: incredible twists and fatal circumstances. Just this linking of different genres: romantic, detective, mystic – has become Collins’ half the battle. His most popular works were “The Woman in White” and “The Moonstone”.
“The Black Robe” tells us a story about Romayene, who visited Bologne because his aunt was dying. The fate brought him to the place where the card game is played. It is totally corrupted and Romayne got some argues with a card sharp. He challenges him to a duel but nominates his son to do the accurate shot and win the duel. That’s not what Romayene wants and he has to fight and it happened that he killed the young boy, the son of the sharp. It torments him and he can’t hide from his own thoughts. But then he meets a woman who falls in love with him.
